Blackletter Modern
My type, Blackletter Modern is described just in the name. Blackletter being the Gothic type done by a broad nib pen, which is what i was inspired by in a tuscan church. I took many of the ideas for the composition of letters such as 'g' and 'n' and went with my gut from there on what i felt a modern type of gothic broad nib pen would look like. As some have commented, yes it does look a bit like the 'harry potter font' namely because it too is a gothic typeface, and coincidentally i just visited where she wrote her books in scotland ;)

New San Marco font

New San Marco by Jon Terzini
This is my font, modelled after the typeface found above the old pharmacy at San Marco Piazza. I kept the slanted crossbar on the A and also gave the letters M, N, W, Z broken stems to create diversity and interest. One characteristic I found about the type above the Pharmacy is that it is hand made so I put a definite emphasis on individual characters being slightly different from each other. I thought it would be fun to make the font san serif because the original has serifs.
Cory's font: "SMN Florentine"

For this font, SMN Florentine, I was inspired primarily by some of the type in Stazione Santa Maria Novella:

Secondarily I was inspired by the unique Florentine serifs:

Here are some preliminary sketches I made before outlining in Illustrator; exploring the serifs and x-height:

Experimenting with the letterforms not in my reference images, and exploring the orientation of the serifs:

Working on some of the more difficult letters, as well as the entire lowercase which will probably never make it to the computer:

Outlining the remaining letterforms:

If anyone actually wants it I can just email it or something. Ciao!

Meg Sheeley: 3 Pieces

First- Self Portrait in 3D
When first thinking about this piece, i started with looking around me, about what my activities were in florence, and how they represent me. One thing that stood out was the culture of food in the city, going to the fresh market, and preparing garlicy fresh flavorful meals. I also have been fascinated by the garlic here, and how much BIGGER and STRONGER the garlic is. But just aranging the garlic, didn't quite do it for me. I wanted to show the process of cooking, of extracting the garlic clove from the head, something i do at least once a day. So, I arranged the letters of my name, in a way that goes through the steps, but at the same time, I didn't want the creation of the letters to stray too far from the normal cooking process. To fix this, I created organic natural shapes using all pieces of the garlic and placing them to create the effect of coincidence. That while going through this process each day, there was an actual chance that this configuration might take place.
Next, photos of type around florence...

Typographic Tour
With all of the modern construction and installations, it was really nice to be able to discover the historical typographical layers of Florence. I learned a lot on the tour and will definitely keep my eyes peeled for these types of signs and artifacts.

la esperienza del nostro typotour
I thoroughly enjoyed the typotour on the grounds that I enjoy the history and evolution of type around florence. It is so easy for us to jump on a computer and type something out but to see a 600 year old stone tablet that someone spent an entire day working on is crazy.

Cory's 2D & 3D self-portraits
They've got layers, man.

In a way we are what we wear, but as we all know there is more to us than meets the eye (just think Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes," but less sexual?). My clothes do say something about me, but they don't help people really know me. There is much under the surface that may or may not ever be evident to others. The overall look of the final product seems very "me."

My computer is like me in many ways. It looks good and w
orks hard, but sometimes gets bogged down and just needs some time to think. But it usually likes spending time with people, and gets pleasure from enriching the lives of others. Like the 2D design, there is much more to it than meets the eye. As for the letters, it's usually pretty easy for m
e to blend in and just be subtle, and you may take little notice of me at first glass. It's also easy for people to push my buttons! Not really, physical contact is one of my love languages. Ok, is this too personal for the first post? I stopped talking about my project a while ago so I'll stop typing now--ciao.
il mio super sweet pittore

When I first arrived in Florence I was a bit overwhelmed as were many others like me, I felt a little lost. To show my feelings, in this piece I superimposed my name behind the shape of Italy and purposefully cropped many of the letters to make it difficult to read. I repeated my last name to show that I want to experience all of italy, and not simply live out my days here in Europe all in Florence. I used red because it is a color that I associate more with dynamicism, if i were to have used blue I doònt think it would have worked as well since blue is more of a calming color.
Meg's Self Portrait

Meg Summerfield Sheeley
For this first project, I used a photograph of my hand, and specifically the bracelets which i wear every day. The hook bracelet represents my mother's side of the family, from the carribean specifically st. croix. Usually I am wearing others as well that are meaningful to our grandmother and to us grandchildren as we grow up and visit her there. So by using something that represents me and my family I created a new bracelet that spells out my name Meg- The elements of my choices and heritage creating the letters of my name.
